Well, the first step is to make sure the sound drivers are installed properly. Does the device show up properly in the Device Manager? Does it show up in the Audio/Sounds configuration item in the Control Panel? If so, then: Does any sound work, and it's just the extra channels that do not operate? If that is the case, you probably just need to run the configuration wizard. It sometimes sits in the tray, but almost always is available in the Control Panel. Once you run it you can pick what kind of speakers you have to control the various sound outputs properly for your setup.
